A major advantage of water electrolysis is that it can be performed on a large scale. For example, it can be done on a small scale using off-grid or local power sources (including renewables such as wind and solar) to generate hydrogen, which is then transported and converted into electricity for smart, flexible distributed and small-scale energy applications ; can also be performed on some large-scale instruments to generate large quantities of hydrogen for renewable energy storage and to supplement or replace fossil fuels.
Another major advantage is that water electrolysis can harness unstable renewable solar and wind energy to generate a stable hydrogen energy medium, which can then be converted and used when needed. In general, solar and wind energy can provide a variable output that, due to their instability, is difficult for the grid to receive, which essentially limits the supply of electrical energy produced by these energy sources into the grid. Therefore, it can be considered that providing a medium that can store the electrical energy when it is sufficient and release it when the electrical energy is insufficient is the key to solving these unstable energy applications. In this regard, using clean electricity from solar and wind energy to drive water electrolysis and mass production of hydrogen as an energy storage medium is considered as one of the viable options.
